DOMINO |
G.W. BRIDGE |
GARRISON KANE |
|
Part III: Visions of Understanding October 1999 by Megan Curtis The wind bit through the thin parka Domino was pulling more tightly around her. What she wouldn't give for her X-Force duds right about now. She never felt like she was freezing to death when she was wearing them. Domino was just disembarking from the plane where she and G.W. Bridge had been passengers for the last few hours. They had flown from Washington DC across country and then up to a small Canadian city called Penticton. At least, they had been told it was small. This metropolitan tourist trap was not what either of them had expected. As they walked inside to the main airport, there were banners proclaiming the town's name in bright, bold, letters. A tall, slightly large man was leaning against a wall near the baggage claim. He looked at everyone entering the building, trying to choose the right people. He finally located Bridge and Domino and walked over. "Bridge?" He asked gruffly. "I take it your with the hotel service?" "That's right. Which are your bags?" After the three adults had located Domino and Bridges luggage, their new hotel friend carried them out to an awaiting bus. "The hotel sends a driver out to pick up everyone arriving on the planes. You're the only two on this run. Go ahead and get on." The ride to the hotel was done in relative quiet. Domino and Bridge didn't talk to each other; they just sat on either side of the bus and stared out the window at the town. "So how long have you been maried?" "Huh?" Domino's head snapped up as she met the bus driver's eyes in the mirror. Bridge covered for Domino's confusion. "Oh, we've been married for years. Tell me are you married?" The bus driver grinned. "Me and Stacy have been married for 25 years. How long have you and the misses been together?" Domino was still in shock and was unable to answer. "Oh, only 15 years, but we've known each other a lot longer." Bridge was quick to say. She held back her questions until the bus had stopped at the hotel, and the driver was busy with the bags. She glared at Bridge. "What did you tell the hotel?" Bridge looked slightly embarrassed. "They didn't have any rooms left anywhere in town when I called to make reservations, so I told them we were on our anniversary honeymoon. We got a room relatively fast." She didn't look convinced, but she didn't argue. She even grinned at him when they checked in. Bridge couldn't help feeling guilty though. Sure, he liked Domino, they'd spent the night in the same hotel room before, and nothing had happened. Of course, there were 4 other men with them, but that was beside the point. They were both adults, and just because Bridge had feelings for her, didn't mean she felt the same. So, being in the same room would only be uncomfortable for him. Domino grinned when she saw the room. It was two storeys. There was a jacuzzi on the top floor. The bottom floor had a refrigerator and a separate room for the huge master bed. She immediately threw her bag on the bed and began to unpack. "You get the couch, Bridge," she stated matter-of-factly over her shoulder. G.W. knew better than to argue with her. They both unpacked and decided the first course of action would be to eat. Bridge threw his hand up in the air. "Another drink for me and the lady!" The waitress nodded and rushed towards the bar. "You know, Bridge," Domino leaned across the table and whispered confidently at him. "We could make life easy on that poor waitress if we just went right on over to the bar instead of making her bring us drinks every five minutes." Bridge stared through fuzzy eyes at his slightly drunk companion. "What would be the fun of that? Besides, I get to smile at her every time she comes over." That made Domino laugh even harder. "How lucky do you think your going to get with a wife sitting across from you?" He raised an eyebrow at her, "I believe your drunk Dom." "I'm not drunk! And you're more wasted than I am. I think it's time we went up to our room." Domino's hand flew up in the air. "Cancel that order, we'll just take the check." Domino helped carry Bridge upstairs and grinned a 'thanks' to the bartender who had helped her. "I can walk," Bridge was muttering from the floor. "Do you need any help getting him inside ma'am?" She just shook her head and handed him a 20-dollar bill. "I can manage. Thank you though." As soon as the bartender had rounded the corner, Domino opened the door and kicked at the sleeping form in the hallway. "Bridge! Get up! You're to heavy to carry to the couch." He lifted his head off the floor and stared through fuzzy eyes at her. "How come your not as drunk as I am?" "That's my secret and I'm not telling." Domino's secret was that she had been drinking apple juice and water for every shot of whisky and Tequila Bridge took. With a grunt, she pulled G.W.'s form into the room, just enough to close the door. "I don't remember you weighing this much, Bridge." Domino was suddenly reminded of a night in Venezuela back in the Six Pack days. She and Bridge had gotten smashingly drunk, but she had been clearheaded enough to help him upstairs to his room. She remembered pulling him into his room and getting him in his own bed. As she had leaned over to pull the covers up, he had reached up and kissed her. Before she could have done anything, he fell back asleep. As Domino glanced at the sleeping figure on the floor, she couldn't help but notice that there wasn't much difference between the G.W. Bridge of yesterday and the G.W. Bridge of today. Sure his hair was a little grayer and his midsection had a bit more fat than it once did, but that was normal for a man of his age. She shook herself back to reality. Why did she even care? She and G.W. were friends. FRIENDS! They didn't need to be anything else, even if that one kiss had been the most memorable in Domino's life. Almost as memorable as the kiss she and Cable had shared when they thought the world was going to end. Now there was a relationship that kept floating back into her mind. She and Cable had been such good friends, and then Tolliver had kidnapped her and sent that witch Vanessa to take her place. God, she hated Vanessa right now. It wasn't bad enough that for a year, Domino had remained tied up, a helpless prisoner of Tolliver, but thinking of what had happened between Cable and Vanessa made her skin crawl. But that was the worst part. Not knowing exactly what had happened. She had asked Siryn once, what had happened between CopyCat and Cable. All Theresa had said was "they were good friends." She got the same answer from Meltdown, Jimmy, and Shatterstar. Rictor was the only one who had given her a straight answer. He had stammered and tried to change the subject, but had eventually given her the rundown. "The way I hear it Dom, they were close. Real close. Of course that was before I showed up to this outfit, so everything I know, I got from Sam and Tabitha." So they had been close, huh? Well how close was close? Were they as close as Domino and Cable had been? In the pit of her stomach, Domino knew that Cable had been closer to CopyCat. As Domino crept into the separate bedroom, she smiled at G.W. "G'night Bridge," she mumbled to the unconscious blob next to the outer door as she softly closed her bedroom door. She heard a grunt come from the lifeless form and a smile played across her face. He might not be Nathan and he might only be a good friend, but he had never had any kind of relationship with Vanessa. Bridge glanced at the clock near the couch. 4 am. Why couldn't he sleep? He had woken to use the facilities and had stumbled, half blind from the floor to the couch. He had expected to go back to sleep, but instead he was laying here and had been for the past hour. He had drunk more than he was used to, but Domino had been so great at dinner, he had wanted to prolong the evening. What a great mess you made, he thought to himself, she had to ask the barkeep to help her get you upstairs to your room. He groaned as the thought made his head hurt. He was going to have one heck of a hangover, come morning. He got up from the couch to get a drink of water then. As he wandered towards the restroom, he stumbled across a dark figure, standing just outside the bathroom door. Before he could put up a defense, he was flat on his back with a foot on his throat to cut off his air supply. The light came on and his shadowy figure formed a beautiful temptress, with long black hair flowing from her head. Bridge blinked and the temptress shifted to form a very angry Domino. "Bridge!" She gasped out, before removing her foot. "What are you doing?" She helped him to his feet and he shook off the lasting image of her eyes wide open in surprise at finding him there. "Jeez, Dom, I was heading for the can. What did you think I was doing?" "Oh, I'm sorry." She mumbled hurriedly. I heard someone moving around. My reflexes kicked in faster than my common sense. They stared at each other for a moment in silence before Bridge thought of the dumbest idea of his life. Without a second though, he leaned forward and kissed her. It was a spontaneous move and one unexpected by both parties. Domino resisted for a split second, but then she leaned into his embrace. After what seemed like an eternity later, but was in reality only a few seconds, they broke apart. Bridge stared at her and cursed. "Dom! I, um.. well.... Um, I.... Um I, well...." She put a hand on his arm. "It's okay Bridge, you don't need to explain." "Uhhhhhhh, I don't?" She shook her head. "You're still drunk, it's okay, I'll forget about it." That was not the response he was looking for. "Dom, I may be drunk, but I meant to kiss you. I wanted to kiss you." Domino just smiled. "Um, I'm going to go back to bed. G'night Bridge." She started walking back towards the bedroom. "Domino! Wait! Look, can we talk!?" He started to follow her, but she shut the door in his face. Then he heard a small click in the door that signified the end of the conversation. He could have broken in. By God, he was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent! No stupid hotel room lock was going to keep him out, but he wouldn't force a conversation out of her. She obviously didn't want to talk about it and he had to respect that. Even if he didn't like it. With another curse he spun back to his couch and threw himself down. What had he expected with that kiss? That she would profess her undying love to him? "You're a fool G.W." he mumbled to himself. What had he been thinking when he kissed her? The next morning, Domino was gone when Bridge woke up. He immediately panicked, but after a quick check, he found her bags still in the room and a note next to the fridge. I went for breakfast and to see what I could find out about our friends. -Dom Well this morning started out the way I wanted it to, he thought sarcastically. At least she hadn't left. Besides, it was time they focused on the reason they were in Canada. To find Vanessa if she was here. If she wasn't, then to go back to New York and find her. He picked up the telephone and placed the call. A male voice answered. "SHIELD. Washington DC department. May I help you?" "Max, it's Bridge. Do you have the information I need?" Max gave Bridge three phone numbers that had been registered to a 'Garrison Kane' in the Canadian area. Bridge thanked him and hung up the phone. Then he started calling the numbers. Two of the numbers no longer existed and before he could try the third one, lady luck entered the room. "Domino!" He gave her a bright smile that wasn't quite returned in full. She had a grocery bag in front of her. "Do you need some help?" "No," she mumbled at him as she put the bag down. "I've got it." "Oh, okay." He tried not to show his disappointment. "I got some numbers I've been trying to call. I've got one more on my list and then we can talk. Okay?" "Sure Bridge, it's not like we need to talk about anything." She turned her back to him and began to unpack the bags. He sighed but didn't argue and turned back to the phone. He listened as it rang once, twice, three times. At least this time it was an actual phone number. At the sixth ring, Bridge began to hang up the phone, but then he heard a click. "Hello?" A male voice answered. Bridge didn't say anything for a moment. "Hello?" The voice repeated. "Kane?" There was a heavy silence on the other end of the receiver. "Who is this?" "It's Bridge, Kane. How have you been?" A deep laugh was heard on the other end of the line. "G.W.! It's good to hear your voice, man! I've been good. What are you doing calling me?" "It's important that I talk to you soon. It's about Vanessa." Again, a heavy silence was heard. Then Kane turned defensive. "What do you want to know Bridge?" "I need to know where she is." At that time Domino came over and leaned against the wall, listening to the conversation. "I think there's another phone upstairs," he mouthed at her. She crept up the stairs to find it. "Why do you need to know that Bridge? She isn't under arrest is she? Even if she is, I won't hand her over to you. We've been through to much, you should know me better than that." "Look, kid. Some joker is walking around New York robbing banks and trying to blow up buildings and she's wearing Domino's face. Your girl is the only one that I can think of that would try to do that. Plus she's the only one with an opportunity." Domino's voice was heard clear on the line. "Kane, it's Dom. Look, someone's going around as me. I've been through this once, only this time I'm free, and I can catch them before they try to lock me up again. If it is Vanessa, she's got to be stopped." "It isn't Vanessa," Kane shouted out. "She's been through hell the last few months. Besides, she has an alibi. And a good one at that. She's with me, all right and we haven't been to New York in ages. It isn't her." He lowered his voice then. "I hope you find whoever it is Dom. I'm sorry." "So am I," she mumbled into the phone and then replaced the receiver. She leaned out over the rail and stared down at G.W. as he said good bye and hung up the phone. "What am I doing here?" she asked softly. He stared up at her in her sadness. "I don't know Dom. What's our next step?" She laughed harshly. "You're the SHIELD agent, you tell me." "Okay, I think our next step is New York." "Bridge, you read my mind."
